LICENSING SYSTEM
ABOUT LICENSING IN NZ
The New Zealand Motorcycle Licensing system follows a three-step process aimed at gradually increasing your experience and responsibilities as a rider.

Step 1 : Learner Licence
Step 2 : Restricted Licence

STEP 2
RESTRICTED LICENCE
To get your restricted licence, you need to obtain a CBTA 6R certificate. You may apply for your restricted CBTA 6R certificate once you have obtained your learner licence. You must be 16 ½ to apply. Once on your restricted motorcycle licence, you can ride a LAMS-compliant motorcycle without passengers, between the hours of 5 am - 10 pm.
STEP 3
FULL LICENCE
To get your full motorcycle licence you'll need to present a CBTA 6F certificate. If you have completed a competency-based training and assessment CBTA 6F course, you can get your full licence once you turn 17½. If you haven't completed a CBTA 6F course, then you must be 18 before you can get your full licence. Once you have completed the full licence CBTA assessment, you can ride any time you like, ride any motorcycle you like and you can carry passengers.
