GENERAL FAQS
On the test day, you should bring appropriate riding gear, including a front-fastening jacket, long pants (jeans preferred), and sturdy footwear that provides ankle protection. Motorcycle helmets and gloves will be supplied on the day. It is important to ensure that your riding gear provides adequate protection.
The training/assessment will still go ahead in the rain.

LEARNERS LICENCE FAQS
The Basic Handling Skills Test (BHST) is a practical test conducted by an approved motorcycle riding instructor to assess your ability to handle a motorcycle in basic riding situations. It includes tasks such as manoeuvring, braking, and control exercises to demonstrate your fundamental riding skills.
You can do the Basic Handling Skills Test before you turn 16 but you will not be able to apply for your learners licence until you're 16.
Yes, you can use your own motorcycle for the Basic Handling Skills Test. However, it is essential to ensure that your motorcycle is in good working condition, has a current Warrant of Fitness, and meets the safety requirements specified by the NZTA.
Once you have successfully passed the Basic Handling Skills Test (BHST), you will be issued a certificate to take with you to VTNZ or AA to apply for your licence and sit your theory test. The application typically involves completing the necessary forms, providing identification documents, passing a theory test, and paying the required fees. Once you have successfully passed the theory test, presented a BHST or completed the riding assessment and completed the necessary application process, you will be issued your motorcycle learner licence. The exact timing may vary depending on the processing time of the NZTA, but typically, you will immediately receive a paper version of your licence after completing the requirements. You will receive your ‘plastic’ learner licence in the mail shortly after.
Yes, there are resources available to help you prepare for your theory test. Everything you need to pass the test is in the 'Official New Zealand Road Code'. You can buy the Road Code at most bookstores and driver licensing agents. It’s also available online. This resource covers road rules, signs, and safe driving practices specific to motorcycle riders in New Zealand.

RESTRICTED LICENCE FAQS
A CBTA 6R (Competency-Based Training and Assessment) Restricted Licence Assessment is a practical assessment conducted by an approved assessor. It evaluates your riding skills and determines if you meet the requirements for obtaining a motorcycle restricted licence in New Zealand. The CBTA 6R also assesses your ability to handle the motorcycle, follow road rules, and demonstrate safe riding practices.
You can apply for your motorcycle restricted licence assessment (CBTA 6R) once you have a learner licence. You must be at least 16 ½ to apply.
To apply for your motorcycle restricted licence, you can present a CBTA 6R certificate. The CBTA certificate demonstrates completion of competency-based training and assessment. You can apply for your restricted licence at a VTNZ or AA.
For your training and riding assessment, you need to use a motorcycle that is LAMS (Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme) approved. LAMS-approved motorcycles are within the specified engine size and power limits of up to 660cc, which comply with the restrictions of a learner or restricted licence.
FULL LICENCE FAQS
A CBTA F Licence refers to a Full motorcycle licence obtained through Competency-Based Training and Assessment. Your riding skills will be assessed throughout the entire duration of the ride. The assessments are designed to ensure you are competent in a prescribed range of riding skills which are important to keep you safe when riding on New Zealand roads.
You can apply for your CBTA 6F nine months after you receive your CBTA 6R restricted licence. However, you are required to wait for 12 months to exchange the certificate for a CBTA 6F full motorcycle licence. Check out NZTA's website for more information on getting your full licence.
You must provide your own bike and it must be LAMS approved and able to maintain open road speeds. It must also meet certain requirements set by the licensing authority, such as being roadworthy and having a current Warrant of Fitness. You can hire a rental LAMS-approved motorcycle if your own motorcycle is not LAMS approved or you don't have your own motorcycle to use. We recommend you are familiar with the motorcycle you will be using.
To apply for your motorcycle full licence, you need to complete the required training and assessment through a registered training provider. Once you have passed your Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA 6F) successfully, you will be given a certificate to take with you to a licencing agency (AA or VTNZ). You can click on the Application Form (DL1) to proceed with your application. You are required to provide Proof of ID.
The duration of the CBTA 6F assessment may vary. Typically, it involves practical riding tasks and evaluation of your riding skills. The CBTA 6F assessment takes between 25 - 30 minutes of riding time, which allows for a comprehensive assessment of your riding skills in both urban and higher-speed-zoned areas. You must allow up to 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete your CBTA 6F, including the briefing and final paperwork.
After successfully passing your CBTA 6F assessment, you will be eligible for your full motorcycle licence. This allows you to ride without the previous restrictions associated with learner or restricted licences. You can enjoy the freedom to ride any motorcycle and carry passengers, subject to any additional legal requirements or restrictions.
