WHAT IS A CBTA?

Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) is a system designed to enhance motorcycle training and licensing in New Zealand. It provides a structured approach to assess riders' competence and skill progression.

Under CBTA, riders can undergo coaching and then undertake assessments to demonstrate their competency in specific riding tasks and manoeuvres. CBTA offers different levels of assessment, such as CBTA 6R for learner licence progression and CBTA 6F for restricted licence progression.

Once you have your learner licence, you can sit your assessment ride for the CBTA 6R at any time that you feel ready. After you've successfully completed the assessment, your assessor will give you a Waka Kotahi CBTA 6R certificate. You can then apply for your restricted motorcycle licence at any time (provided you're over 16½ years old).

This comprehensive training and assessment framework aims to ensure that motorcycle riders in New Zealand receive proper instruction and evaluation, leading to safer and more skilled riders on the roads.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN & BE ASSESSED ON

Riding Tasks:

  • Moving in: Getting the motorcycle underway and entering the traffic flow.

  • Straight: Riding straight ahead with or without other traffic.

  • Curve: Riding around a curve or bend in the road.

  • Intersection: Moving through or turning at intersections where other traffic may cross your path.

  • Turning back: Making a turn to ride back in the opposite direction.

  • Moving out: Exiting the traffic flow, such as using off-ramps or turning into vehicle entrances.

Riding Competencies:

  • Moving in: Getting the motorcycle underway, entering the traffic flow, and merging.

  • Looking: Look with your head and eyes up in the direction of travel.

  • Scanning/Mirrors: Using your mirrors and scanning to stay aware of your surroundings.

  • Head check: Using head checks to regularly check your blind spots before manoeuvring.

  • Communication: Using the appropriate means of communication as either a courtesy or legal requirement.

  • Consideration/Courtesy: Being considerate and courteous to other road users.

  • Positioning: Maintaining proper position within the lane for safety and visibility.

  • Speed management: Managing speed appropriately for the road conditions and legal limits.

  • Progression: Making smooth and controlled progress while riding.

  • Stability/Smoothness: Riding in a stable and smooth manner, avoiding jerky movements.

  • Following distance: Maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.

Note: These are some of the areas that will be assessed during the motorcycle assessment to evaluate your riding skills and ability.
