WHAT IS A BHST?

The Basic Handling Skills Test is a practical test consisting of four stages:

  1. Basic turn and stop

  2. Figure of eight and park

  3. Linking figures of eight

  4. Increased speed and emergency stop

Each stage is broken down into varying combinations of the following tasks: moving off, riding in a straight line, cornering, stopping, parking.

While completing the above tasks, you will be assessed on the following:

  • Looking in the correct direction

  • Signalling correctly

  • Making head checks before changing position

  • Lateral position of the motorcycle

  • Control of the motorcycle

  • Using appropriate speed

  • Parking observation

  • Parking movement

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

During the basic handling skills test, you will be assessed on four stages that cover essential manoeuvres and control of your motorcycle.  Your training prior to the test will also cover these stages (as necessary, depending on your experience). The training and stages include:

  1. Basic Turn and Stop: This stage evaluates your ability to make controlled turns and bring the motorcycle to a controlled stop. It tests your handling skills and coordination while manoeuvring the motorcycle at lower speeds.

  2. Figure of Eight and Park: In this stage, you will demonstrate your control and balance by navigating through a figure-of-eight pattern. This tests your ability to handle the motorcycle smoothly while maintaining stability. Additionally, you will be required to perform a parking manoeuvre to assess your control during slow-speed operations.

  3. Linking Figures of Eight: This stage builds upon the previous one, where you will need to smoothly link multiple figure-of-eight patterns. It assesses your ability to maintain consistent control and balance while transitioning between manoeuvres.

  4. Increased Speed and Emergency Stop: In the final stage, you will showcase your ability to handle higher speeds and perform an emergency stop. This evaluates your control, braking skills, and responsiveness in situations that require sudden and precise stopping.

The basic handling skills test aims to ensure that you have the necessary control, coordination, and manoeuvring skills to operate a motorcycle safely. Each of these stages will demonstrate your ability to handle a manual motorcycle. By successfully completing these stages, you demonstrate your competence in basic motorcycle handling.

REQUIREMENTS

Before you can apply for your learner licence, you must pass a basic handling skills test, conducted by an approved motorcycle riding instructor.

TRAINING PACKAGES

2 HOURS TRAINING & TEST (BHST)

The service is recommended for a beginner rider with little to no prior motorcycle riding experience. You should at least be able to ride a bicycle and balance at slow speeds before learning to ride a motorcycle. A basic understanding of a manual clutch and gears is an advantage, but not necessary. Note: some beginners may require additional training sessions to ensure they are prepared for the test.

1.5 HOURS TRAINING & TEST (BHST)

The service is recommended for a beginner rider with limited motorcycle riding experience. Alternatively, this service will suit a rider with moped or scooter experience, who requires additional training to familiarise themselves with manual clutch and gears.

1 HOUR TRAINING & TEST (BHST)

This service is suitable for a rider who has prior experience with a manual clutch motorcycle. This service allows students to build on an existing foundation of riding skills, such as changing gears and turning.
